Our commitment to sustainability is a fundamental theme in Our Purpose, and central to Our Bond, and Our Strategy, which define the way BlueScope develops, manufactures and sells steel products and solutions.
This commitment to sustainability extends beyond our own operations and includes the way we source materials, engage with all those we do business with and support our local communities. At BlueScope, we see a strong future for steel, providing a critical foundation for sustainable economic development and the transition to a low carbon society.
BlueScope embraces circular economy principles in product development, including designing products for durability and resilience. Steel is strong, durable, and versatile and its inherent properties allow it to be recycled without loss of quality over and over again. In some cases, it can be reused without reprocessing, saving on energy and resource use.
We strive to reduce the embodied carbon of our products, which is supported by our climate strategy and plans, including our goal of net zero emissions across our operations by 20501. We transparently report the environmental impact of a number of our key products, including greenhouse gas emissions, via Environmental Product Declarations which are published in line with European Standard EN15804 and registered with EPD Australasia. A number of our products are also certified to the internationally recognised ecolabel Global GreenTagCertTM GreenRateTM.
BlueScope’s Port Kembla Steelworks site, where the steel for BlueScope’s branded products is manufactured, has achieved ResponsibleSteel™ certification. ResponsibleSteel™ is the steel industry’s first global multi-stakeholder standard and certification program. The ResponsibleSteel™ certification can give organisations in the steel value chain confidence in the environmental, social and governance performance of our steelmaking facilities, and may help them to meet their climate objectives and manage supply chain risks.
Our sustainability credentials are supported by our company-wide sustainability initiatives including those relating to responsible sourcing and supply chain sustainability and climate action. We publicly report our sustainability performance, including greenhouse gas emissions, in our Annual Sustainability Report and Climate Action Report.
- Our 2050 net zero goal covers BlueScope's Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions. Achieving the 2050 net zero goal is highly dependent on several enablers, including commerciality of emerging and breakthrough technologies, the availability of affordable and reliable renewable energy and hydrogen, availability of quality raw materials, and appropriate policy settings.
